I joined Bose in 1988 when it was a little-known speaker company with $300 million in annual sales. I was attracted to the position because the company did, and still does, all creative work in-house. As the company grew, I saw the department expand from a small team of fifteen to the size of a large, diverse agency of over one hundred. I stayed at Bose because I was continuously given opportunities in creative, technology, leadership, and business management. I'm very proud to say that I was a dedicated contributor in helping this amazing company get to where it is today – two billion dollars in annual sales with over 7,000 employees worldwide. In 2003, after nearly fifteen years of growth and learning I left to search for more diversity and fresh air in my career.
Responsibilities
I started as a senior art director with concept, layout, and photo art direction as core responsibilities. As the years went by I was promoted into greater roles including leadership, process development, technology infrastructure, client services, and senior management.
Major Accomplishments
- Key leader in the creation of Bose's online presence. I taught myself interaction design principles and HTML to create the architecture and visual design for the first two generations of the Bose web site. The first Bose.com generated over $8 million dollars in first-year sales. For me, these efforts resulted in a promotion to the newly-created position of Online Creative Director. In the role I lead all creative efforts for Bose online including the creation of processes as well as recruiting and leading a ten-person creative team of designers, writers, and technology specialists.
- Art director for the launch of the now famous Wave Radio. Created all initial and many subsequent marketing materials for this very expensive clock radio.
- Art director for the launch of Bose's chain of retail stores. Developed in-store signage and promotional advertising. Today Bose has over 200 retail stores throughout the world.
- Art director of Bose's first international automotive ad campaign. The Bose Car campaign utilized cutting-edge 3D illustration techniques and was placed throughout the world – my favorite being the Tokyo auto show in 1994.
- Spearheaded the implementation of Macintosh-based design resulting in increased creativity, productivity, and saving the company over $150,000 per year in typesetting costs. I also trained the team on the use of the software – Remember PageMaker?
- Introduced virtual product photography as a creative tool. I asked our photo retoucher 5000k Color Studio to create high-quality, photo-realistic product images using 3D software. The initiative increased creative possibilities and lowered photography costs by more than two thirds without sacrificing aesthetic quality.
- Selected to attend, and graduated from the in-depth Bose management program Leadership for Action. This intense training program taught advanced skills for effective leadership of multidisciplinary teams: Process discovery/improvement, team development and missions, interview techniques and requirements, individual performance management and career development, as well as inspirational leadership techniques.
- During the competitive recruitment of the late 1990s I lead the development of a recruitment brand strategy and resulting creative consisting of advertising, trade show booth, and collateral. The results increased the awareness of Bose as a innovative employer and great place to work. It also generated significant recruiter leads resulting in a number of long-time open positions being filled.
- Hired over 30 individual contributors and managers, many of whom are still at Bose.
