Robinson Associates was a small fifteen person shop with Dunkin' Donuts (print) as their major account. They also had a few smaller accounts including BASF, Vibram Soles, and Simmons College. In the late '80s, Robinson struggled and eventually went under after Dunkin' Donuts brought their print creative work in-house.
Responsibilities
I was one of two art directors working on design and production of all Dunkin' in-store materials, franchise promotion materials, and newspaper ads – many newspaper ads. (If I never see another rubber cement coated line art illustration of a jelly donut it'll be too soon.) I also worked on all new-business pitches.
Accomplishments
The 1985 Dunkin' Donuts calendar was the first major art direction project of my career. That year Dunkin' wanted to feature kids – an amazing opportunity for this newbie art director. I developed the scenarios and hired stylist Lesley Fenton and photographer Jim Raycroft. Together we selected the kids, found the perfect locations, and created thirteen shots in 2 weeks. The clients absolutely loved the results. To this day, I'm proud of the work I did on that project.
